Hello, beautiful people from across the lands! I am here with another book review for The Hidden Psychological Effects of Money on Black Women. Isn’t the title itself deep! Reading this book confirmed some of the things I talked about in my blog post Money & Emotions. I found this book listening to one of my favorite Podcast duo Mark and Shyra Murrey from Black Married & Debt Free. Shyra is one of the five co-authors in this book collaboration. All black women of course. The book is a very quick and comprehensive read.
My Thoughts
The book takes you through various different money journeys of these 6 women. It provides their perspective on the experience of life within finances. In each story, there was a common theme I saw that seems to happen in many of our lives when it comes to money. What was that theme you ask? Read the book and come back to comment on what you may think it is. One thing for sure after reading, it helped bring validation to the reason why I started this Hopeful Reality journey.
It was empowering to read about the various financial hardships each of them had to endure and learn from some similar to mine. I was hoping for a more in-depth clinical approach to the psychological evidence-based found research on this particular topic. There were some but just not in-depth as I was expecting. It was more of a storying telling approach with learned lessons. However, I did find value in the lessons shared.
Who Should Read it?
The book title itself speaks specifically to its target audience. I do think this book was written to encourage the conversation amongst black women when it comes to money. Of course, if you are not a black woman you could read the book and learn as well. Given the historical and present impact money has had within the black community I would encourage more help to move the conversation. Help in creating action when addressing the many money traumas within the black community.
Tips On Completing a Book
I wanted to share a few tips I found to be helpful when finishing this book and previous. These tips aiding in moving me closer to my reading goals for 2020. Prior to this worldwide lockdown, I found time during my commute to work on the Metro to get my reading in. Now with me being home with two kids, those dynamics have changed. Please pray for ya girl! I am slowly adjusting to this new normal in general but found some habits that have helped me continue my reading journey.
- Dedicate 30mins to a 1hr to read daily, with my school-age kids I get this in during our scheduled quiet time
- Use the Notes app to jot down key takeaways from the book, I like to use the talk to text feature so I don’t lose time typing them in
- Use a timer or app to set time aside to read that will go off when that time is done, this provides structure and tricks my brain to stay alert waiting for the timer to go off
You can read more in-depth on how to apply these tips in this post here. I hope this book review was helpful and informative. Be sure to support a sista and grab a copy of The Hidden Psychological Effects of Money on Black Women.
Until next time dream, believe and achieve.
